From books &
imagination
The
Chicago librarian who had dreamed
of owning a piece like this was
visiting Bill’s neighbors in
Maine when she saw his work. She
knew on the spot that he was the
one to build it for her. Working
from books and imagination, she and
Bill then created the design and
drawings, and a few months later,
the finished piece was shipped west
to her home. It is made of solid
black walnut and has French walnut
door panels that demonstrate
Bill’s love of matching grain
patterns. The traditional
butler’s desk is covered with
soft brown leather on the business
side, as shown here, and it folds
up to reveal a satinwood oval inlay
that matches the other accents on
the front of the piece as well as a
small interior cabinet. There are
nine rosewood drawers and one
secret drawer. The bottom cabinets
are shelved with solid black
walnut. Truly one of a kind.
